The Atlas of Furniture Design book is, as the name suggests, an encyclopedic overview of the history behind modern furniture design. The book contains 1700 pieces of furniture by over 500 designers and 121 manufacturers. There are about 2800 images, ranging from object images to historical depictions of interior design, patents, brochures and other relevant documents on art and architecture. The book's basis is the Vitra Design Museum's collection, which is one of the world's largest with over 7,000 works. The book presents selected works from the most important designers over the last 230 years and documents key periods of design history incl. the early 19th century industrial furniture, Art Nouveau, the post-war period, postmodernism and more. There are over 550 detailed texts on key works, in-depth essays on the sociocultural and design-historical context as well as a detailed annex with biographies, glossaries and comprehensive information graphics.
